AstraZeneca is to cut the cholesterol-lowering drug Crestor by 40 per cent on Tuesday, Health Canada said on Thursday.
The Canadian Health Products Regulatory Agency said the drug, which blocks the cholesterol-lowering drug, Crestor, will be removed from sale in the United States on Wednesday and other countries, including Australia and Canada, will also continue to sell it.
The drug's patent for the statin Merit Rx has expired in the United States, the FDA said in its notice of intent to halt distribution of the drug. The agency has also not yet decided whether to sell the drug in other countries.
The agency's notice of intent said the drug has been "discontinued" in the U. S. and Canada. It was not authorized for sale in Australia and Canada, it said.
It was "notifying the Canadian Food and Drug Administration (CFCA) and the Australian and New Zealand Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (ANPR), that Crestor was not being distributed in the U. S.," the notice said. It added that the drug's U. distributor has also not stopped making claims against the agency for the drug.
The agency said the drug had been under development since 2009.
The Canadian Health Products Regulatory Agency said it will begin finalizing the drug's approval in October.
Crestor, which is sold under the name Crestor, had been on the market since 2006. The drug has been under investigation by the FDA since the year 2009.
Crestor is one of several cholesterol-lowering drugs that are also used to treat high cholesterol and prevent heart disease.

AstraZeneca today announced it has reached a settlement with Eli Lilly for its prescription drug Crestor, which treats high cholesterol.

The settlement also includes $1.3 billion in additional payments to the settlement, the largest ever in a multidistrict regulatory settlement. Additionally, Lilly has entered into a settlement agreement with AstraZeneca to resolve its outstanding patent on Crestor, in the U. market.
The settlement resolves claims of both Crestor and Crestor® and also resolves the remaining patents relating to other prescription medications, such as Lipitor, Plavix, Mylan and Valtrex.
About Lipitor
Lipitor was the first of its kind to win approval from the U. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2003. In 2008, AstraZeneca became the first-to-market company to obtain regulatory approval for a new cholesterol-lowering medication. Lipitor has been approved to treat high cholesterol and to lower LDL-C and triglycerides and is already in the process of approval for patients with type 2 diabetes. Lipitor is an approved statin drug and is currently in Phase III clinical studies.
This settlement resolves the issue of patent infringement of Crestor, an over-the-counter cholesterol-lowering medicine. The settlement resolves claims of both Crestor and Crestor®, and also resolves the issue of patent infringement of Lipitor, a statin medication.
Lilly will continue to manufacture and market its generic version of Lipitor until December 31, 2024, or at the earliest, whichever happens first.
